Title
The Early Editorial Policy of the Montreal Witness
Abstract
The Scottish-born John Dougall (1808-1886) founded the Montreal Witness in 1846 and was the paper's editor for the next ten years. The paper was a strong advocate for evangelical Protestantism, temperance, Sabbatarianism, economic progress, and free trade. The author outlines Dougall's negative opinions of Irish and French Canadian Catholics, his support for various Protestant religions and temperance movements, and his views on Canada-U.S. relations.
