Abstract |
An examination of the assemblies and meetings of the opposing Patriotes and Loyalists in the years leading up to the Rebellion of 1837 in Lower Canada. The authors found that between January 1, 1834 and December 30, 1837, the Loyalists organized 645 political events attended by 3,304 people, while the Patriotes organized 609 events attended by 5,160 people. The authors also discuss the socio-economic situations of principal political leaders, providing information regarding languages, ethnicity, and professions, as well as the divide between urban and rural leaders.
