Abstract |
An attack by Alexander Tilloch Galt (1817-1893), English Protestant Quebec's representative during the Confederation debates, on a pastoral letter written by Montreal's Bishop Ignace Bourget. Bourget stated that the Catholic Church should control and direct the scope of political action and public law in the province. Galt claimed that this action would contravene the guarantees given the English-speaking Protestant minority at the time of Confederation.
