Abstract |
Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (1821-1893), lawyer, businessman, educator, politician, militia officer, and gentleman farmer, was the first Canadian-born Prime Minister of Canada. Born in St. Andrew's East (now Saint-André d'Argenteuil) in Argenteuil County, Abbott served as Prime Minister from June 1891 to November 1892. Earlier he had served as mayor of Montreal (1887 and 1888).
