The Fenian Raid on Trout River, Quebec, 1870
|
Abstract |
A story of the short-lived invasion of Irish American Fenians who, on May 27, 1870, crossed into Canada from New York State at Trout River, near Huntingdon, Quebec, in an attempt to capture Canada and exchange it for the liberation of Ireland from British domination. The invasion ended quickly when the Fenians were met by 240 soldiers of the 50th Battalion Huntingdon Borders, 500 soldiers of the 69th British Regulars, 300 soldiers of the Montreal Garrison Artillery, and 70 members of the Montreal Engineers. The Americans beat a hasty retreat back across the border.
