Abstract |
The son of a steamship captain, the Scottish-born Wallace (1886-1958) became a clerk with the Allan Line in 1902, and in 1905 he moved to Montreal with his family where he became a waybill clerk with Canadian National. After founding the Hudson Yacht Club and freelancing as a writer and illustrator, he moved to Nova Scotia. In 1924 he published Wooden Ships and Iron Men : The Story of the Square-Rigged Merchant Marine of British North America, the Ships, Their Builders and Owners, and the Men Who Sailed Them. The book was revised and reprinted in 1937 and reprinted again in 1976.
