Abstract |
A history of Hemmingford's St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (1823-1925) and its Methodist (now United) Church; as well as the Covey Hill Union Church and the Russelltown Presbyterian (now United) Church. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was established by Rev. John Merlin of Northern Ireland in 1823. The first services were held in a school in Scriver's Corners (Hemmingford original name). In 1842 a stone church was built north of the village. In 1872, with an increase in the size of the congregation, a brick church was built. The first Methodist church in Hemmingford was built in 1834. The present building dates from 1893. The church was part of the 1925 amalgamation into the United Church of Canada.
