Mary and Ralph: From Blackburn, Lancashire, to Valleyfield, Quebec

Abstract |
The author's grandparents, Mary Sharp and Ralph Dolphin, emigrated from the mill town of Blackburn, Lancashire, England, to Valleyfield, in 1910 and 1912 respectively. Valleyfield was the home of the Montreal Cotton Company, established in 1873. The mill recruited labourers from Blackburn because of their experience working the looms used at Montreal Cotton that were manufactured in Blackburn by Henry Livesey Limited.
