Abstract |
Louisa Elizabeth (Gray) Lambton, Lady Durham (1797-1841), accompanied her husband to British North America when he was appointed Governor General in 1838, shortly after the insurrections in 1837 in Lower Canada and Upper Canada. In Lord Durham's entourage was his private secretary, Edward Ellice as well as Ellice's wife, Katherine Jane Ellice (1814-1864). Both women kept journals of their time in Lower Canada, excerpted in this book. Jane Ellice's journal includes her recount of her week-long captivity by Patriote rebels at her husband's seigneury at Beauharnois. The publisher describes this book as two journals, two intentions, two points of view on this decisive page in Quebec history.
