Abstract |
A partial biography of nineteenth century Montreal businessman and politician, Luther Hamilton Holton (1817-1880). Rising from humble origins, Holton became an entrepreneur extraordinaire, with interests in real estate, railway building, steamboats, and banking. Holton was a member of the Montreal City Council from 1850 to 1851, and later represented Montreal and then Chateauguay in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. He served as Finance Minister between 1863 and 1864, and opposed the idea of Confederation without constituent consent. He represented Montreal Centre in the Quebec Legislative Assembly from 1871 to 1874, and from 1867 to 1880 represented Chateauguay in the House of Commons. On a broader level, the author studies the political, economic and social ideals of English-speaking Lower Canadian businessmen and their concern for self-aggrandizement and community development.
