Abstract |
An examination of labour unrest at the Valleyfield-based Montreal Cottons Limited. Founded in 1874 by Andrew Gault, this textile mill was supported financially by such well-to-do Montreal businessmen as Sir Hugh Allan. The mill labourers tended to be mostly French Canadian Catholics while the owners and managers were English Protestants. The first strike at Montreal Cottons happened in 1880. The author outlines the strikes at the mill between that date and 1946, and the attempts by trade unions to organize the workforce. Trade unions were largely unsuccessful in their efforts until the mid-1940s. Not only did management oppose the union movement at Montreal Cottons, but the provincial government, the Catholic Church and the local French language newspaper all opposed trade unions and strikes.
