Abstract |
An examination of electrical power generation in Quebec over the first three decades of the twentieth century. Between 1900 and 1910, there were some 130 municipal power generating companies in the province. By the end of the First World War, four regional companies came to dominate the production and supply of electrical power in Quebec, acquiring most of the municipal companies in the process: Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company in the Montreal area; Quebec Railway, Light, Heat and Power in the Quebec City region; Shawinigan Water and Power in the Mauricie and North Shore; and Southern Canada Power in the Eastern Townships and what is today known as the Montérégie. The author focuses on Southen Canada Power, the dominant company in the Townships and Montérégie, to highlight the fundamental social issues related to the formation and consolidation of these regional monopolies.
