The Politics of Place Names: The Commission de Toponymie and the Eastern Townships
|
Abstract |
A study of the Commission de toponymie du Québec from 1977–1982, the five years immediately following the implementation of the Charter of the French Language (Bill 101) that created the commission. The author focuses on the changing of existing place names in the Eastern Townships during this period, and argues that the sixty-six place names changed in the region during the five-year period appear not to have been driven by political, linguistic or cultural motives, contrary to the beliefs of many Anglophones, but to accommodate local heritage, history and language.
