Abstract |
A critical assessment of the career and opinions of R.W. Heneker (1823-1912), a Sherbrooke businessman and local politician who played a role in most of the major economic and social institutions of the Eastern Townships. Heneker was Commissioner of the London-based British American Land Company, and served terms as president of the Eastern Townships Bank and the Sherbrooke Gas and Water Company, Mayor of Sherbrooke, and Chancellor of Bishop's University. Also discussed is Heneker's attitude towards the rapidly declining Anglophone population of the Eastern Townships during the second-half of the nineteenth century.
