Abstract |
The author outlines the history of St. Helen's School, originally known as the Dunham Ladies' College, founded by the Anglican Bishop of Montreal Ashton Oxenden and opened in the Eastern Townships village of Dunham in 1878. The private boarding school for girls changed its name to St. Helen's School in 1913. One of the school's most famous graduates was the novelist and translator Joyce Marshall (1913-2005), whose 1946 novel, Presently Tomorrow, questioned the Anglican Church's priorities while offering a glimpse of life at a private girls' school. St. Helen’s School closed in 1972. Bishop's University's Eastern Townships Resource Centre archives holds a fonds on the school.
