Abstract |
The author reminds us that the Potato Famine of 1846–56 severely affected the West Highlands and Islands of Scotland, forcing mass emigration to the New World. Those who settled in Quebec's Eastern Townships, she notes, kept alive memories about the homeland, the Atlantic crossing, the allocation of land in the Townships, company houses, pioneer homesteading, optimism, faith, and community spirit. She points out that while newspapers and official records document the famine, it is fireside stories handed down through generations that tell of faith, hope, loyalty, honesty, neighbourliness and hard work.
