The World(s) of Three Pines : Creating Community in the Novels of Louise Penny
|
Abstract |
Louise Penny is the author of fifteen English-language detective novels in which the imaginary Eastern Townships village of Three Pines serves as the primary setting for murder investigations led by Armand Gamache. The author points out that Penny's novels portray linguistic and cultural cohabitation, both in bucolic Three Pines and in urban Quebec locations, and paint a portrait of the province for English-speaking readers. Drawing on the narratological theory of Gérard Genette, the author takes as her starting point the concept of narrative levels in order to delineate three worlds - virtual, fictional and emotional - shared by readers of the Gamache series.
