Abstract |
Carrollcroft, a cut granite and fieldstone house in the Italianate style in the town of Stanstead in the Eastern Townships, was built for Charles Carroll Colby (1827-1907) and his family in 1859. The American-born (Derby, Vermont) Colby was a lawyer, businessman, Methodist layman, and federal politician and Cabinet Minister. On May 13, 1992, the Stanstead Historical Society officially took possession of the Carrollcroft property, donated by the Colby family, to house the collection and archives of the Colby-Curtis Museum. The author describes the architecture and interior design of the house, and the history of the Colby family.
