Portrait of the English-Speaking Community of the Lower St. Lawrence Region (Québec, Canada): Current Understanding and Future Research Directions
Abstract
The first comprehensive report on the vitality of the existing English speaking community (ESC) in the Lower Saint Lawrence. The main objective of this report is to contribute to a better understanding of ESCs in this region in order to promote their development in a way that addresses the challenges they face and improves the health and well-being of their members. Founded in 2002, Heritage Lower Saint Lawrence is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to mobilize people and resources to support the vitality of the English-speaking community of the Lower Saint Lawrence. Home to Quebec’s smallest English-language community (0.6% pop.), the region has a permanent English-speaking population of about 1,200. Most English-speakers in the region live either in or near Rimouski, La Mitis, Rivière-du-Loup or Matane, in over 70 municipalities, including the only bilingual town in the region—Métis-sur-Mer.
