Abstract |
A biographical novel on Elsie Reford (1872-1967), a leading figure in Quebec for several decades in the twentieth century, active in philanthropy, social concerns and political causes. In the 1920s and 1930s she developed an outstanding floral garden at her summer home at Métis-sur-Mer, Quebec, on the Lower St. Lawrence River, today open to the public and known as Les Jardins de Métis. Writing the novel, the author was given access to Elsie Reford's correspondence, including her exchange of letters over sixteen years with Lord Gray, who served as Canada's Governor General from 1904 to 1911.
