Abstract |
The British-born Church of England clergyman Charles James Stewart (1775-1837) served as Anglican minister in the Eastern Townships seigneury of Saint-Armand, starting in 1808. In 1809 he built Trinity Church in the village of Frelighsburg, the first regular place of Anglican worship in the Eastern Townships. That year, Anglican Bishop of Quebec Jacob Mountain (1749-1825) visited the church and was impressed by the psalms sung by the congregation. He later learned that the psalm books used by the singers on the occasion of his visit had been compiled, printed, and distributed free of charge at Stewart's expense for the congregations' use the year before. The book was titled "A Selection of Psalms and Hymns for the Congregation of the Church of England in St. Armand, Lower Canada." It is the earliest known Anglican hymn book published in Canada.
