|
Abstract |
The author traces the history of tennis in Quebec City played by the city's English-speaking population, based mainly on information found in the Morning Chronicle newspaper. Tennis was created in 1874 in England, and the first reference to the game in Quebec City appears in a newspaper advertisement in the Morning Chronicle in 1876. The first mention in the newspaper of the Quebec Lawn Tennis Club is in 1886. The author concludes his study in 1905, when Francophones begin to take up the game of tennis.
