Abstract |
The author outlines a "quick picture" of the founding of the Manior Richelieu in La Malbaie, Charlevoix County. The hotel dates back to 1867 when John William Chamard and his wife, Marguerite Louisa Morrisson, constructed a ninety room hotel, called "Chamard's Lorne House," on the site where the Manior Richelieu now stands. In 1898, the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company bought the Chamard property and built the first Manoir Richelieu, designed by Montreal architect Edward Maxwell and built by the Montreal firm of W. Scott. The hotel becomes the summer destination of Montreal's Anglo elite. In 1928 the original Manior Richelieu was destroyed in a fire, and a new (the current) hotel was built, designed by Montreal architect John Smith Archibald and built by Wilde and Bydon.
