Abstract |
An examination of the importance of landscape in the development of a Montreal Yiddish literature at the beginning of the twentieth century. A symbol of the newly found freedom that the Yiddish speakers, uprooted from their East-European shtetl, encountered in their country of adoption, the physical territory of Canada, rural and urban, played a part in the definition of a Canadian Jewish identity. The author examines the importance of this landscape in the development of a Montreal Yiddish literature. After having summarized the achievements of Yiddish writers who described and used representations of the Canadian landscape, she sheds a light on the original vision that these writers have created.
