Abstract |
A study of domestic servants over two periods in nineteenth century, specifically for the period 1816-1820 for Montreal and Quebec City, and for the period 1871-1875 for Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, and Toronto. The data for 1816-1820 shows that domestic servants came from surrounding areas, while for 1871-1875, they were often immigrants, or the daughters or sons of immigrants. According to the 1871 census, English-speakers (British, Scottish, Irish, and American) comprised 82 percent of the live-in servants in Montreal's wealthier St. Antoine district, with Irish women dominating these domestic servants. In Quebec, English speakers comprised 47 percent of the domestic servants in the wealthy district of the city, mostly Irish women, compared to 52 percent being French speakers.
