Title
Ukrainian Bilingual Education in the Montreal Public School System, 1911-1945
Abstract
Bilingual Ukrainian-English education began in Montreal in 1911 and continued until 1945 within the Montreal Catholic School Commission. The author describes why the French Catholic Church in the province promoted this system as a means of drawing the Ukrainian immigrants into the Catholic educational system (and away from Protestant schools and French Catholic schools), and to fight the socialist and communist influences that the Catholic Church perceived were influencing the Ukrainian community.
