A Man of Many Firsts: Ernest Melville DuPorte
Abstract
The British West Indies-born Ernest Melville DuPorte (1891-1981) immigrated to Montreal in 1911 to attend Macdonald College and later McGill University. He played an important role in the creation of the Institute of Parasitology at Macdonald College, and the Entomology Department at McGill. He was also the author of the classic textbook, Manual of Insect Morphology. Among his firsts, DuPorte was the first student to graduate from Macdonald College in the field of entomology, the first Macdonald student to be given a position as research assistant, and the first Black professor to teach at McGill University.
