|
Abstract |
A survey of the works painted by American artist Willbur A. Reaser (1860-1942) for the family of Charles Carroll Colby (1827-1907) during the artist's numerous stays in Stanstead, Quebec. The author discusses how these paintings participated in the construction of the social and family identity for the Colby's, as displayed within the walls of their home, known as Carrollcroft. Reaser was born in Ohio but later moved to Iowa. He studied drawing and painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Academies Julian and Colarossi in Paris. He won gold and silver medals at the California Exposition in 1894 and a prize at New York’s National Academy of Design in 1896. He was a successful painter of prominent men and painted many public figures. He died in Minneapolis in 1942.
