Abstract |
A history of the annexationist movement of 1849, of the causes which led many of Montreal's leading English-speaking merchants to support the idea of union with the United States, and of the reaction of contemporary Montreal newspapers. The author examines the reaction to this movement, inspired and led by the Montreal-based Central Annexation Association, in the Gazette, the Herald, the Courier, the Pilot, the Witness, La Minerve, Le Moniteur Canadien, and L'Avenir.
