Abstract |
John Holmes (1799-1852), an American-born Protestant who converted to Catholicism, was ordained a Catholic priest in 1823. For four years he served as a missionary in the Eastern Townships. In 1827, Holmes became a professor of philosophy at the Séminaire de Québec, and in 1830 he became the Director of Students. He was recognized as one of the founders of the Université Laval in its charter granted in 1852.
