Title
The Yellow Line : Italo-Canadian Oral Histories from Backyards and Schoolyards
Abstract
The author describes and copies some of the interviews with six Italian Montrealers that were included as audio clips that played during the "Yellow Line Exhibit," held at Montreal's Casa d'Italia from March 22 to 24, 2019. All six people interviewed describe growing up in St. Leonard in the 1950s to the 1970s, and how they were rejected from attending local French schools by the education authorities. The author challenges the myth perpetrated by many Quebec historians that Italian parents chose to send their children to English-language schools and ignores the fact that these immigrant children were refused entry into French schools.
