Title |
Beyond Physical Boundaries: The Symbolic Construction of Chinatown
|
Abstract |
From the 1960s to the 1980s, Montreal's Chinatown was the site of extensive urban renewal projects. The author investigates the relationship between the symbolic construction of community and questions of ethnic identity. He concludes, based on 20 questionnaires and 10 interviews, that ethnic communities are not dependent on objective structural characteristics such as locale, but are bound by a complex set of symbols with which the boundaries of their ethnicity are constructed.
