Title
Language Maintenance, Bilingualism and Religion in Gaspé East
Abstract
The authors examined the extent to which the English and French of Gaspé East in 1970 retained their mother tongue, and whether bilingualism is a step toward language change. While the authors conclude that bilingualism does not spell a rapid loss of one's mother tongue, they discovered that in Gaspé East religion was a determining factor in whether an English-speaking person was bilingual. They found that more English-speaking Catholics were bilingual than English-speaking Protestants.
