Abstract |
The weekly True Witness and Catholic Chronicle was an ultramontaine Catholic Montreal newspaper, founded in 1850 by George Edward Clerk (1815-1875), as an "organ in the English language to repel the ceaseless attacks of Protestant journals..." Its main rival was The Montreal Witness, a weekly evangelical Protestant newspaper founded in 1846. The True Witness became the defender of the largest English-speaking Catholic group in Montreal, the Irish, and maintained a staunch campaign for land reform and Home Rule in Ireland.
