Abstract
An assessment of the “public memories” expressed in Montreal through the erection of historic plaques and monuments. The author contends that the city’s “heritage elite” – librarians, archivists, teachers and lawyers – did not have a homogeneous outlook. The group was divided by language and religion. The Francophone component sought to commemorate the people and places of New France (e.g. Dollard des Ormeaux), while the Anglophone component pushed for the designation of post-Conquest people and events (e.g. Admiral Nelson’s column, Queen Victoria and the Boer War).
