Abstract |
A story of the educational conflict between French Quebec Catholics and Irish Quebec Catholics in the 1920s small village of Farrellton in Pontiac County, West Quebec. According to the author, the Irish and the French Canadians of this village clashed over the school question and in particular, on the shared space and the amount of recess which Francophone students should be entitled. He further calims that Irish leaders who controlled the local Catholic school board used Ontario textbooks, followed almost all Ontario school rules (including Regulation 17), and neglected the teaching of French. Ontario's Regulation 17, adopted in 1912, prohibited the teaching French in separate (i.e. Catholic) schools. It was repealed in 1927.
