L'historiographie des irlandais en Amérique du Nord : le cas de Saint-Colomb-de-Sillery en 1871
|
Abstract |
Based on the 1871 census, the author attempts to situate the Irish community of Saint-Colomb-de-Sillery, near Quebec City, in the competing historiography between the older American interpretation of Irish immigrants to North America, which portrayed these immigrants as being predominantly post-Famine Catholics living in ghettos in urban areas and doing poorly paid jobs, and the newer Canadian interpretation of Irish immigrants, which portrayed Irish immigrants to Ontario as pre-Famine middle-class rural Protestants who lead prosperous lives on their land. The author concludes that the Saint-Colomb-de-Sillery Irish immigrant experience was more akin to the older American interpretation.
