Research Note: The Representation of Ireland and the Irish in the Québécois Novel
|
Abstract |
A survey of the portrayal of Ireland and Irish characters in Québécois historical novels published since the late nineteenth century. The author contends that these novels illustrate the shared ideals of the two groups regarding religion, politics, family and language. Most Irish portrayed in Québécois novels, especially Irish Catholics, are presented in a positive light and represent a perception of a shared history of political and religious oppression within the two cultures.
