Changement de langue, changement de voix? Une étude comparative de l'effet du statut des langues anglaise et française au Québec sur la prosodie de la voix de locuteurs bilingues
Abstract
Studies have show that people with low voices are perceived to be more dominant. These studies further show that people in higher socio-professional occupations are perceived to have lower and deeper voices than people in lower socio-professional occupations. The author set out to examine if this phenomenon of social dominance could be reflected in the voices of people speaking languages that coexist within the same territory and who are in an adversarial relationship. Specifically, she was interested in the linguistic situation in the province of Quebec, in which the French and English languages coexist. Using sixteen bilingual Quebecers (ten women and six men), the author confirmed that the perception of French differed from that of English, but with regards to women's voices only. She found that the participants reacted more favorably to the voices of women speaking French and the French-speaking female voices received a better assessment that masculine French-speaking voices. However, the author found no statistically significant difference between French-language recordings and English-language recordings from the point of view of the height and extent of the voice.
