Cold Cash and Ice Palaces: The Quebec Winter Carnival of 1894
|
Abstract |
First suggested by Frank Carrel, publisher of the Quebec Daily Telegraph, in October 1893, the winter carnival was organized by the provincial capital's French- and English-speaking business communities. The author provides detailed information of the French–English relationship in the planning of this carnival. Both business communities fully supported the event, unlike the ones in Montreal. The author delves into the social history of the city, its split between French-English quartiers, upper class vs. lower class citizens, and the opening of the Château Frontenac in time of the carnival.
