Les incontournables demeures de la rue Sherbrooke à Montréal
|
| Abstract |
As the author notes, at the start of the 20th century, Sherbrooke Street was one of the most beautiful streets in Montreal. The English-speaking elite had villas built there to the west of St-Laurent; later, the French-speaking middle class settled between St-Timothée and St-Dominique streets. However, the author points out, as the city centre shifted, the street lost some of its charm. Whilst the majority of the houses are no longer standing, some fifty residences have been preserved. Thie author takes the reader on a journey along this street from west to east, through his illustrations, showcasing the historic residences, their architects and, above all, the people for whom they were built. He also highlights the houses that have disappeared and the various architectural styles that prevailed on this street.
