Abstract |
The author claims that the Jail Act dispute of 1805-1807 split the population of Lower Canada along ethnic lines. Previous to this incident, he maintains, the colony had been divided between those Anglophones and Francophones with commercial interests and those with agricultural interests, or between those who supported direct taxes and those who wanted indirect taxes. He claims this dispute was the seeds that blossomed into the ethnic conflict that grew in Lower Canada for decades.
