Irish Canadians and the National Question in Canada
|
Abstract |
The "national question" that the author refers to is English-French relations in Canada. The author analyzes the role played by the Irish, especially in Quebec, as a "cross-cutting cleavage" between English (Protestant) and French (Catholic) Canadians at the federal and provincial political levels. The author concludes that there is some evidence to support the proposition that Irish Quebecers helped maintain both the unity of Canada and social peace in Quebec by serving as a bridge between the English and the French.
