Abstract |
In 1988, the American-born author, then an aspiring dance musician, moved to Quebec to study Quebec traditional music and dancing. She went to the Irish/Scottish/English communities of Shannon, St. Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Stoneham, Tewksbury, and surrounding small villages north of Quebec City, first settled by English-speakers beginning in the late eighteenth century. There she discovered the traditional music and dance steps dating back to England and Ireland (e.g. the "Set" and the "Lancers") at house parties, where neighbours gathered together, as their ancestors had for over two centuries, to play their music, sing their songs and dance that reflected the isolation and the intimacy of the area. The author describes the music played by such renowned local elders as fiddlers Eric Corrigan and Eddie Whelan, accordion player Keith Corrigan, and singer Jimmy Kelly.
