Abstract |
The author points out that the 1861 census listed the province's population as being: 847,665 French Quebecers and 167,949 English Quebecers, as well as 96,000 people born outside of Canada. Among these new citizens were 13,000 English and Welsh, 50,000 Irish, 13,000 Scots, 13,000 Americans and some 3,000 Europeans.
