Abstract |
Throughout the first-half of the twentieth century, Montreal was an important centre of Yiddish culture. The author points out that at the heart of this vibrant culture was poet Ida Maze (1893-1962). Maze brought together the local Yiddish intelligentsia in her literary salon, as well as offered important resources to Eastern European Jewish immigrants newly arrived in the city. The author examines Maze's literary and communitarian engagement, and shows the paradigms revealed by the relationship of her salon to the European Jewish world's tradition of salons.
