Abstract |
A short history of The Quebec Herald and Universal Miscellany, founded on November 24, 1788, by the British actor and journalist William Moore. The paper changed its name to the Quebec Herald, Miscellany and Advertiser on November 26, 1789. The author outlines the newspaper's reaction to various eighteenth century ideals that were sweeping the western world, including demands for freedom of the press, democratic government, and opposition to all forms of arbitrary authority. For the Quebec Herald, these took the form of opposition to the seigneurs, both French and English, to the clergy reserves, and to any attempt at censorship by either church or state. The paper ceased publication after its July 25, 1792 edition.
