Abstract |
A comparison of religious freedom for Roman Catholics in the British colonies of Quebec and Ireland at the turn of the nineteenth century. Looking at Quebec, the author compares how Governors James Murray, Guy Carleton and their immediate successors, with the failed exceptions of Lieutenant-Governor Sir Robert Shore Milnes and Governor Sir James Craig, disregarded the instructions to tolerate a form of Catholic worship severed from Rome's control, allowing the Church in Quebec to continue as before the Conquest will little interference from civil powers.
