Title
Aspirations of West Indian Parents Towards Their Children's Education
Abstract
An exploration of the aspirations of 20 English-speaking Montreal parents of elementary school students of Caribbean background for their children. The author concludes that despite these parents' high aspirations, their socioeconomic and/or ethnic status influenced the outcome of their views. The parents feel their children will be disadvantaged in a society where the realization of perceptions of success are dependent on ethnic status vis-a-vis the dominant group. The parents also anticipated racial and socioeconomic disadvantages for their children because of their skin colour, compounded by the fact that the children are Anglophones in Quebec.
