Title
Ni catholiques, ni protestants : les juifs de Montréal
Abstract
The arrival in Montreal at the beginning of the twentieth century of a large wave of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe heralded a new phase in the perception that the anglophone and francophone communities had of their respective institutional networks. The author points out that the Jews, who constituted the first non-Christian collectivity to take root in Quebec, imposed on the Anglo-Protestant and Franco-Catholic communities the need to define more clearly their respective identities. The greatest impact of the new arrivals was on Quebec’s school administrations, which had developed strictly on Christian confessional structures. The author examines how in Montreal the Jewish migration redefined the relationship between majorities and minorities.
